Is Fiber Really Necessary for Weight Loss?

I think that most of us realize that getting enough fiber in our diet is important to our health.

As a rule, populations that eat greater amounts of fiber are healthier.  Fiber helps us avoid constipation as well as helping us avoid certain diseases.  It helps cholesterol leave our body, which lowers our risk of heart disease.  It even binds carcinogens in our intestines to it and moves them out of the body quickly, which helps lower the risk of colon cancer.  All in all, a lot of health benefits.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that fiber can help us lose weight as well.

Fiber helps us feel full a lot sooner, and keeps us feeling fuller longer.  This can really help us reduce portions and eat fewer unnecessary calories.  It even helps dietary fat move through our system faster, which means there’s less of it to turn into body fat.

Meat and dairy products have no fiber, and most processed food as had the fiber in it removed.  Therefore, the best sources of fiber are fruits, veggies, legumes, brown rice and whole grains like oats or wheat.

Don’t be fooled by the clever marketers into thinking that if a loaf of bread says “multi grain” or “whole wheat” on it!  Most wheat breads you buy at the store are the same as white bread…they’ve just added coloring to make it look more natural.

Making sure that you are getting 40 grams of fiber a day will help ensure that you’ll lose weight and get healthier.  Add it slowly though, and also increase your intake of water.  If you don’t do this, you’ll end up getting constipated.  🙂

Yes, fiber is vital to our health and our weight loss efforts.  So be sure to get your fiber in every day.

I have found that if you are the kind of person who uses a scale each day, consuming fiber messes with your weight. So my advice, ditch the scale before you ditch the fiber. Once you reach a good weight, then the kind of weight adjustments fiber brings won’t be so bothersome.

If people only knew how much of a help fiber is for a diet I’m sure they would eat more of it. My favorite fiber and diet saver – air popped popcorn (plain) with 0 calorie butter flavored spray Lady Rose

Hey, TT — great advice — I hadn’t thought about that, but you’re absolutely right. Thanks for stopping by and contributing!

Lady Rose — that is one of the yummiest ways to get fiber that I’ve heard of. Thanks for sharing!
