Coming Soon to a Drug Store Near You – The Mother of All Side Effects

Have you heard of Alli? If you haven’t, you soon will.

Alli is the first (and only) FDA-approved, over-the-counter weight loss product. It’s manufactured by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline, and they’re sinking $150,000,000 into a marketing campaign to make sure you hear about it, and hopefully whip out the wallet to hop on the Alli bandwagon.

Apparently, it works by blocking fat absorption by about 25%. Of course, this fat still has to leave your body, but we’ll talk about that in a minute.

Provided you’re eating a low fat diet, eating less than normal, and are exercising, Alli will help you lose 25% more weight. So, in other words, if you eat low fat, eat less and exercise your way to a 10 pound weight loss, Alli will sky rocket that loss all the way to 12 pounds. Yep…and for only $54 a month.

And oh, by the way, there are a couple of side effects.

Remember, Alli works by blocking fat from being absorbed by your system. But this fat still has to exit your body, and there’s only one way for it to do so. 🙂

Because of the limited exits, the side effects of Alli include loose stools, intestinal gas…and intestinal gas with an “oily discharge”.

An “oily discharge”.

I don’t know about you, but where I come from, that’s called “crapping your pants”.

Personally, that’s a bit more than I’m willing to risk to lose 2 pounds.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see where Alli taken as directed could benefit someone. But the whole thing I want you all to keep in mind is that it only works as a supplement to eating a low fat diet, eating smaller portions and exercising.

So before you run out and spend $54 a month hoping for a magic bullet of weight loss, make sure that you’re taking the basic steps of good nutrition and exercise that we talk about here every day.

And make sure you keep a spare pair of undies in your desk drawer.

I have so much stuff to say about yet another diet pill on the market I decided not to say anhything – instead I wrote a song today and posted the words (hey at least I didn’t sing it!) 🙂 Lady Rose

Thanks for the laugh about “crapping your pants”. Just another company wanting to get your money and making you think you will lose big weight. Save your money and just watch what you eat and excerise.

Yeah I wrote a post on this about 3 months ago, and another last week. There is a lot of marketing hype surrounding Alli and this is just the beginning. There is a lot of negative publicity for it across the blogosphere, yet I keep reading positive articles in the biggest news publications in the US. Why is this? Because the manufacturers are paying for it. All we can do is educate eh…

It sounds like deja vu – same marketing crap (oops sorry) and same side effects as Xenical and all the others. I guess you can’t make those dollars out of just explaining – eat clean, exercise more. But I am so fed up with drug companies playing on desperation and lack of education.

My wife was prescribed something similar about 6 months ago (we’re in the UK – perhaps it’s the same drug?), and yep that oily discharge had a habit of, erm, discharging at inopportune moments, such as right as she got into work. She made many a dead sprint to the bathroom to make sure she didn’t crap herself 🙂 It helped with weight loss, but only while the prescription lasted of course!

It’s all about demand. There’s always going to be a demand for products like this and I’m sure in the future we’re going to see even more outrageous pills!

  7. Kate Says:

I think I’ll stick to my healthy eating and exercising, especially for an extra 2lbs of weight loss. Not for me!

EW! Yea, I heard of it. I didn’t know it made your butt leak though.

Some thoughts on Xenical from personal experience. With me, it helped me lose 20 or so pounds in 6 months and lowered my cholesterol from 212
to the 160’s for over 3 years I was on it. My blood sugars improved and my trygliceride levels were down as well. After I stopped taking it (it seems to stop working after a long time) my bloodwork went bad again and now I am on a statin, a blood pressure pill and my glucose level is over 100 again. I started again last month and my cholesterol is down to 125 and I have dropped 10 pounds (another 60 wouldnt hurt). The side effects are minimal as long as you watch the fat that you consume. If you go to taco bell, you are going to see the results in the bathroom the next morning. It’s certainly worth a try!

Sounds like a fun Saturday night.

“Crapping your pants”… Uhm, that’s such an appropriate way of rewording it. I think we call it the exact same thing here. And it’s really not elegant at all. 😉 One reason to avoid those drugs for me; I prefer the ‘hardships’ of exercising and worrying my head 10 minutes a day about what to eat, rather than having to wear a pad just in case of.
