The Truth (About Breakfast) Shall Set You Free

I was sitting in the dining room of the hotel I’m staying at in New York eating breakfast this morning, minding my own business, when a couple came in and sat at the table next to mine.

Now, I’m not one to eavesdrop, but their conversation was loud enough that I couldn’t help but overhear it.

Husband: “Honey, you ought to try the shittake omelets, they’re excellent”. (BTW, I have trouble writing ‘shittake’ without giggling)

Wife: “You know I can’t eat breakfast, I’m trying to lose weight.”

Sure enough, I glanced over at their table out of the corner of my eye, and saw the wife sitting there with a cup of tea and nothing else.

If I was the kind of guy who jumped into other people’s business, I would have  pointed out to her that the shittake omelet (hee hee) is actually a GREAT breakfast to help her lose weight: eggs are incredibly healthy, as are mushrooms.

I would have went on to point out to her that research has shown that eating a healthy breakfast is ESSENTIAL to weight loss. It helps prime your metabolism to burn fat all day,it gives you energy to meet demands at work and at home, and has even been proven to help limit overeating at night!

I would have reminded her that breakfast is the best meal to get a wide variety of nutrients at, because you can eat dairy, fruits, cereals, eggs and meat all at once.

Heck, if she was receptive to what I was telling her, I may even have shared this awesome breakfast pita recipe I swiped from webmd.com with her:

Pita-Licious Breakfast

Ingredients

2 small whole wheat pitas
2 whole eggs (or 1 whole egg and 2 egg whites)
2 Tbsp. low-fat buttermilk
1 medium baking potato, scrubbed and diced into small ½-inch cubes
1 green or red pepper, diced
1 small onion, diced
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

In a nonstick skillet sprayed with cooking spray, cook onion and peppers on medium heat until softened. In small bowl, lightly beat eggs; add buttermilk. Add to pan and cook together with vegetables until done. Serve with toasted pita. About 330 calories, 15 grams of protein and 10 grams of fat (no trans fat).

But, I’m not the kind of person to stick my nose into other’s people business.  So I made a note to come home tonight and write this post to share the importance of breakfast with you who may be interested.

Mom was right; breakfast really IS the most important meal of the day.

Just a minor thing but “I would have went on to point out” makes you sound like a hick. Should be “I would have gone on to point out”.

It took me 6 weeks to convince a friend of mine that skipping bfast (and other meals) was the reason she was losing weight but was still the same size. The weight she lose was all muscle, the fat remained.

Hey, Damien — that’s exactly what can happen when skipping meals, or when cutting calories too low.

    🙂

    Thanks for commenting,

Pfft — I talk like that sometimes, and I’m not a hick, therefore you’re not a hick. QED. 😛

I have a hard time understanding the need to skip breakfast. Perhaps because if I do skip it, I’ll be under the weather or even pass out gas a few hours later. As for weight loss, it has always seemed to me that it was a good way of jumpstarting your body at the beginning of tha day, as well as a good opportunity to (as you mentioned it) eat very varied foods without it being detrimental to one’s whole food plan. Besides, if you don’t arrive at lunch with a stomach that hasn’t been empty for the past 12-14 hours, aren’t you less likely to overeat?

    Hey, Chicken Girl — I sure didn’t think I was a hick!

    Thanks!

It’s amazing how those old myths about losing weight still hang around. We frequent a restaurant that has a “diet plate” that consists of a big ground beef patty, a big scoop of cottage cheese, and tomatoes. Everything full-fat but none of those pesky carbs! BTW…Hicks are beautiful people and will probably unite and have you thrown off the Internet if you try to put them down.

Man, I think it’s so sad when people go on living with all these bad kinds of “dieting”. The low-carb craze, the pill-popping craze, or just the tendency to skip meals when you feel fat (I have done this a few times..and only regretted it) are all so unhealthy. I have recently found a diet that actually works for me, and it only partially came out of a book. I’m doing a modified South Beach diet (I’m nursing a baby, so I can’t be too extreme the first two weeks), and I start every morning with yogurt and often an egg or two. When I skip the carbs completely for breakfast, I just drag through the day without any energy (and a two year old and nine month old will not allow that!). Anyway, just thought I’d share a bit about what’s been working for me. The weight loss is gradual, but healthier than doing something more extreme.

I’m going to start using pita bread more as a healthy alternative to sandwiches at lunch time this summer. The other day, at my favorite restaurant, I had a pita with ham, cheese, spinach, and finely chopped apples. It was awesome, and it’s something I can recreate at home.

  12. Your brother Says:

    You said “shittake”.

    Heheheh

    Hick.

My problem with breakfast is having more than one. I’ll start off with something heathy at home, but then here at work the box of donuts beckons…

  13. loseweightwithme Says:

KATHY — Those old myths do die hard.

KATIE — I lost most of my weight on a modified South Beach, Low Glycemic diet. Very effective.

RICK — I love pitas. I also eat a lot of whole wheat tortillas.

BRO — Lay off the donuts, ya shittake head. Heheheh 🙂

    Hi guys,

I find that eating vegetables (i make my own salad bowl) and fruits for breakfast keeps me feeling fresh and energetic till lunch. Keeps me slim too. Pretty soon after that, the poo comes fast so great for those with constipation!
