8 Ways to Burn 100 Calories That You Probably Haven’t Thought Of

As much as I believe in scheduling regular exercise sessions 3 – 6 times a week, I also believe that there’s weight loss benefits in the simple act of moving.  That’s why I always tell people to just get off of the couch and move.

I got an email today that’s been forwarded a billion times, listing dozens of ways to burn calories.  I’m not sure the origin of the list, but I found it really interesting.  I thought that you might, too.  So here’s 8 fun ways you can move to burn 100 calories, and I bet you haven’t thought of most of them:

  1. Hula hoop for 22 minutes
  2. Cut your lawn with an old push mower for 17 minutes
  3. Jump rope hard and fast for 8 minutes
  4. Do 780 jumping jacks
  5. Ride your bike for 7 minutes at 20 miles per hour
  6. Got a WII?  Play WII tennis for 13 minutes
  7. Play “Chopsticks” on the piano for 41 minutes
  8. Pole-vault for 15 minutes

Of course, none of these will ever replace regular cardio or strength training exercise sessions.  But I think they illustrate what can happen by just getting off of your butt and moving.

So c’mon; grab the hula hoop and meet me outside.

I do 200 jumping jacks twice a week as part of my martial arts warmups – and that’s A LOT. 780 might just kill me…

Yeah I’ve long since given up on jumping jacks doing anything lol. They tone a bit, but I pretty much stick to them when I’m in the pool — more resistance and better for your joints.

Wii sports is great though 😀 It works you out (especially boxing) and it’s really fun.

SAYRE — I couldn’t do that many, either. I do jumping jacks 3 times a week as part of my cardio routine. I don’t count how many I do; I do them for specific periods of time, usually 60 seconds at a time. What kind of martial art do you practice? I take Muay Thai classes…

GRIFFIN — I love the WII boxing! It’s fun and is a great work out.

LOL – you actually burn more calories playing WII than pole vaulting!

I take KenPo twice a week. It’s kind of a mutt of martial arts, taking the most effective moves from many different arts. Street-fighting is really what it is. If you get VS on cable or satellite, look for World Combat League stuff and you’ll see what it is I do.

Jumping jacks are great for getting your heart going and your blood circulating, but I’m not sure they really accomplish much of anything else.

How many calories are burned sitting on the couch, flipping channels and eating Doritos?

  7. loseweightwithme Says:

TOTAL TRANSFORMATION — I think the calories burnt by flipping channels are offset by the Doritos.

    🙂

SAYRE — I’m actually interested in Kenpo, but there are no instructors in the area I live in.
